Interesting bit on Tibetan spirituality by The Guardian last Sunday. Que pasa? A dude who was previously selected by the Dalai Lama as the reincarnation of a former spiritual leader recently gave the entire Buddhist order the finger, and is now studying film in Madrid.

At the age of 14 months, Osel Hita Torres was taken from his parents in Granada, Spain, and placed in a dull monastery somewhere in southern India, as ‘His Holiness’ in all his wisdom concluded that the toddler must be the reincarnation of this formerly cheerful geezer, Lama Yeshe. Torres’ (now 24) heart breaking story was originally found in the Spanish paper El Mundo: “They fucking never let me watch porn!”

As you might have guessed, Tibet fatigue hit us quite some time ago. Feudal Tibet was far from the serene paradise most ‘free Tibet hippies’ would have you believe. For instance, serfs unable to cough up the taxes for the spiritual elite (read: Dalai Lama and his posse) used to be tossed into the dungeons underneath the Potala Palace for some Abu Ghraib style fun and games. Populair forms of punishment included eye gouging, tongue pulling and the more mundane amputation. Many Tibetans are therefore not exactly mournful of the Chinese interference, as your dough spent on tourism and life altering spiritual journeys allows them to buy kick-ass Toyota Landcruisers and enjoy some phat beats in da club.
