Ken Sir, a teaching movie star

If you’ve been here for some time, it’s likely you spotted a few ads on billboards and buses for private schools showing slick teachers who promise you an A+ for your next exam. Now meet Ken Sir. Ken is the owner of the Modern Education Tutorial School, Hong Kong’s most successful private tutorial school that helps students achieve higher grades. He is no ordinary English (!) teacher however. Ken is a true star who wears Louis Vuitton shoes and limited edition Rolexes, spots an Asian equivalent of the avalon and recruits models teachers in Lan Kwai Fong. Here’s a documentary by Mandy Lai Zixian, Kristina Perez and Diego Laje that consists of three separate videos, showing you what private tutoring is all about in Hongkers. The most notable moments are outlined below each part:

0:01 Ken explaining how he met one of his teachers, former model Frankie Tam, in a bar in LKF.
3:12 Advertisement on bus shows that Ken is an “international authority in the English language.”
4:33 Ken is a happy man when he walks the streets of our city, because he helps so many students get A’s.

1:16 One of the key pillars of the school’s success are the ads on the back of buses. Smart cookie Ken explains that “these are what we call, mobile advertisements.”
2:43 “You see, you see?” Students love to come here! – Shot of bored students minding their own business -
2:48 Student: “The tutorial school is not a good place to hang. It’s quite tiring to listen to all those advertisements in the tutorial school, because they have TV’s hanging on the wall and they keep playing those advertisements for their teachers.”
3:28 Ken explains how one of his teachers owns five cars: “A Hummer for.. because he loves traveling.”

0:08 Student: “I don’t think he is really a normal English teacher, he’s more like a movie star in Hollywood.”
0:23 Student: “His grammar and vocabulary is not very good, even bright students can be better than him because he makes quite a number of mistakes.”
0:37 Reporter asks a serious question and Ken resorts to stroking his hair. A few moments later his stylist jumps in to make sure the avalon is restored to full glory.
1:11 “You have to got minimum qualifications to become a teacher in Hong Kong. That is a decent University degree. And that’s it.”
1:49 Student: “Everything he wears is brand name.”
1:55 Student: “There was once he took off his shoe and he put it on the table. And it showed the class that eh.. this is LV.”
3:12 Student: “Some tutorial classes like English, I don’t think it’s very useful.”
3:44 Intelligent ‘uhuh’ moment coupled with grin by model turned teacher Frankie.

abcd, you are obviously an idiot. clearly it states that it is a hku journalism project. you fail at reading, and at life.
  • Frankie Tam
I would like to emphasize that I applied my tutor job through normal interview procedure. Really ashamed for people who like to lie or step on others just to glorify themselves.

Sorry, I think I missed the point of that film, what is so wrong exactly? So the guy's english isn't great and some of the teachers there think they are rock stars, they must be doing something right because they are so successful. Even if it is just how to get the best mark without thoroughly understanding the content, that's what most schools teach anyways, I went through the international school system in hk and it's no different, the pressure for results is too great.

I can't help but feel the ppl who posted before are disgruntled expats who long for the glory years of british colonization where foreigners were guaranteed the best jobs and deserved their standard of living regardless, possibly worried that their already over inflated wages for teaching english have been coming down of late?
  • that was sick i always wondered about these 'stars'. any follow up on this? or reaction?

I feel deeply sorry for the children (and the whole population in general) in HK, 150 years of British colonization - gone down the toilet. Why? - pride. sigh
