Our homophobic government

We may be regarded assholes by some, but The Dark Side stands up for those who like it up there. Exposing Mr. Heyes for the religious zealot he is led to praise by those in the community fighting for recognition and acceptance. Unfortunately Marty’s former colleagues seem to share his views, as illustrated by the following.

Yesterday we were tipped off about a situation that occurred last Saturday night at gay venue Volume in Central, where a crowd gathered to celebrate the successful Mr. Gay Hong Kong pageant, including winner Rick Twombley and organizer Noel Furrer. At around 2 am, approximately 30 liquor licensing board members and police offers decided to enter the venue to swoop the place. Interestingly, the senile licensing board members, all locals in their 50’s and 60’s, were overheard murmuring phrases such as “these degenerates must be stopped” and “this place will be shut down.” Luckily all went down peacefully and the gentlemen left after not being able to find anything to close the place down on the spot.

Now obviously the occasional police visit is a fact of life for any bar/club in this city. Evan Steer -one of the shareholders of Volume- however commented that in all his years in Hong Kong food & beverage, he has never seen anything of this magnitude before. Which makes you wonder whether this attempt by our government to show off its hairy balls is not a direct result of a widely shared anti-gay attitude among its (former) officials.

We never thought we would say this, but it seems our officials could learn a thing or two from their mainland counterparts.

Seems there are some legitimate reasons for a group of persons to take the HK Government to court for the derogatory language used by officials participating in the raid. Yes, there may be legitimate reason to visit the bar and look into the reasons for excessive noise that may have been offending local neighbors trying to sleep. Does it require two busloads of police and officials, especially when they can go to government databases and determine if the bar's license(s) are in order, before wasting taxpayers' money on pulling all availalbe resources into duty on the wee hours of a weekend morning. Maybe they just need some extra cash to pay for their overpriced cubbyhole flats they bought.

When I was a Volume with my Hongkie gang last time, at around 1:30 am 2 police officers entered the place after receiving some complaints from neighbours about the noise. After that visit, the music was turned down a bit and w could all continue with the clubbing night!

To ben s...I was there and I did heard exactly what was said above. It's diplomatic of you to want to wait to hear both sides of the story, but buddy, you weren't there and I was and the report from thedarksideis indeed correct.

    let's not jump to conclusion.

first of all, who were the sources that claimed lines such as "these degenerates must be stopped!" were said? Was it by the disgruntled people inside the clubs? when would clubbers ever accept that cops has legit reasons to raid their event? everyone of them would always claim to be a victim, no?

second, could it be cops went in there because they were too rowdy and loud? I have a friend, who attended the event and she came back saying the whole thing was rather loud and immature (she meant it in a fun way, dont go labeling her a homophobe now).

i'm not defending the cops nor am i saying there was absolutely no hidden agendas for the raid, but to accuse them of being homophobic is stirring shit for the sake of stirring shit.

the term "homophobic" is thrown around way too often. for example, if a straight man is erroneously assumed to be gay, chances are he will initially react with a "what? no way, I'm NOT gay!!!" attitude. does that make him a homophobe? if yes, then 90% of all straight men are homophobes.

most people who crack gay jokes are poking fun at the some gays tendency to be over flamboyant and loud and girly. its rather harmless--similar to laughing at a fat person or a chinese-who-acts-black. it doesn't mean they literally have HATRED for homosexuals.

martin heyes, is definitely a homophobe. the cops who raided the gay bar for being too loud may or may not be. chances are most of them are not.
