Become British.. again

After the Czech Republic became the last EU country to ratify the Treaty of Lisbon last month, the “new” EU constitution came into effect on December 1st 2009. This day was also a day that called for celebration for some of our peculiar fellows in Hong Kong.

BritishHongKong has been fighting “on behalf of” the three millions plus British Hong Kong born people for the right of abode and full British Citizenship for years. One of their major advocates is Martin Oei, a British Indonesian-Chinese dude who is an active local blogger and columnist. The man claims that there’s a great chance for BNO passport holders to become citizens of the EU after the Lisbon Treaty comes into effect. Hurray!

I have no clue why these fellows have been so insistent on this matter. The Brits made herculean efforts to educate Hong Kong people to accept their statelessness. So when the Big Brother came in 1997 and gave us their nationality, some of us resisted. These Honkies’ minds then started longing nostalgically for their remote Britishness. They don’t want their BNOs to be considered a mere travel document and want to self-determine their nationality. It’s a basic human right you hear! That reminds me suddenly of Siu Leung Li. He would be interested in studying these twisted minds, as they’re obviously not at ease with their complicated selfs..

Not too long ago we invented the name “Hi-tech Village” to describe Hong Kong. We have the most advanced technologies here to support the living of one the most conservative and rude people in the world. Europe on the other hand can be a cultured place. Even people like Martin Oei, who has the amazing ability to think in English, cannot even only write an average English essay. Think about that before you book your dream flight “home”, villagers!

Right after I finished writing the above, I suddenly recalled an interesting clip I had watched before. You can see how difficult it was to get a BNO back then. No wonder why our strange fellows at BritishHongKong are that insistent now.
