Australia: the new China
No, not because the Ozzies have pandas now as well. We are referring to internet censorship. In 2010, all internet service providers (ISPs) in Down Under will be legally obliged to filter out banned material. A seven month trial in conjunction with internet service providers found the technology behind the filter to be 100% effective, which means Australia will join the ranks of nations such as China and Iran when it comes to filtering of content.
The evil strongly conservative Catholic mastermind behind this enterprise is Stephen Convoy, the current Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy:
“Through a combination of additional resources for education and awareness, mandatory internet filtering of RC (refused classification)-rated content, and optional ISP-level filtering, we have a package that balances safety for families and the benefits of the digital revolution.”
Obviously many have protested against the plans of this internet villain of the year, yet to no avail. The filter laws will be introduced in parliament in August 2010 and will take a year to implement. Another victory for the conservative lunatics of this world. Sad.
