Our brave new generation of hooligans

A belated happy new year everybody! While most of you were nursing your hangover, thousands of HK’ers marched to the Central Liaison Office to fight in a vain attempt for democracy in Hong Kong on Januray 1st. It was reported that a small number of fighters tried to storm the Office, leading to “minor scuffles.” Our supernova social activist Christina Chan was among the front rows of these brave soldiers.

There was a storm in a teacup followed by some bluster rational discussion in the local blogsphere for the whole week. It was reported by the end of the protest, people at the front rows -mostly the younger warriors- suddenly wanted to sit down. Yes, for some strange reason, they “suddenly” want to sit down, as reported by this blogger and videotaped here. I sympathise with them wholeheartedly. At times, I suddenly want to sit down as well, especially after a few pints of beer.

Long Hair, our maverick at LSD, rushed to the front and asked them not to “fucking sit down,” as he might have figured that a stampede similar to the LKF tragedy back in 1992 could occur. Christina Chan and her fellow fighters later accused LSD for taking advantage at the situation. She argued that it was her and her brave fighters who broke through the police line, yet those bastards from the LSD rushed to the front and stole their show. Blah, blah, blah… There must have been thousand words from this LSD supporter and other thousand words from Christina Chan in her blog, investigating into what have really happened that evening and debating technical issues like if it is right for the troops at the front to sit down…Zzzz…

Some of the media labeled our young and brave fighters at the front as “hooligans”, like our ass-kissing and pro-establismhment the Standard in this article here. “Bashi hou Generation” (those born after 1980) became the latest local media buzzword this week. This generation is described as a bunch of angry kids who are unhappy about everything and see no future. Some conservatives think that they will become a real threat to our boring peaceful society, while others give these young people kudos. They tend to think that even the LSD is no longer radical enough to flog the dead horse of Hong Kong politics; we need the maverick of the mavericks to take over.

Well, political and social activism is a serious business.. no wonder they need to spend so much time on arguing, e.g. like what happened with the pan-democrats mass resignation. We all know it’s not about fame or fortune, it’s about rightness. Losers like me only know how to make fun of people and talk trash on TDS and the Pub. Alas, I feel like a misfit…
