Don’t commit web 2.0 suicide!

Much has been said about Facebook’s recent changes in privacy settings for its users. Our privacy is no longer a social norm according to Mark Zuckerberg, thief founder of Facebook and a 25-year old billionaire. Bastard.

Anyway, as you may also know, it is notoriously hard to get yourself deleted from social networking sites, with often multiple steps you’d have to go through. Things can get even more complicated though. Facebook for example differentiates between deactivation and deletion: deactivating your account is easy (under settings), but doesn’t mean the world is not able to see you being rat-assed during Halloween, as images and other private stuff will still be stored on their servers. Deletion is possible, but Facebook will only do so two weeks after you clicked DELETE. And then the big question is whether all info is really cached out from all back-up servers.

This is exactly why a few noble Dutchmen decided to launch the Web 2.0 Suicide Machine. It’s the brainchild of Moddr, ‘your ‘unfriendly’ neighbourhood medialab’, based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The suicide machine on their website makes it possible to have all your private information removed -automatically- after submitting your login details, saving you hours of manual labor. All with the goal to start enjoying a normal life with real relationships, spending actual time with your wife, friends and kids. Target networks include Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and LinkedIn.

Since its launch in December, 58,401 friends have been unfriended, 230,922 tweets have been removed and 891 people quit their online lives, according to figures as of today. Obviously Facebook got pissed off and started to prevent the machine’s IP addresses from entering the site.
Which appears to be unwarranted, as it would be the actual users Facebook should be attacking as they’re the ones submitting their details. Our advice?

DON’T DO IT! YOU WANT TO LIVE!

Which obviously has nothing to do with the fact that Facebook and Twitter are major sources of traffic for us.
