Where are the black people?

Hong Kong is a greatly diverse and multi-ethnic city. A few years in this place and you end up with friends from all over the world, which is very convenient if you’re not a couch surfing hippie. Every possible cuisine seems to be available and you can even choose between maids from various countries. How metropolitan is that?! However, just like the motherland, this city also has a reputation for racism. Especially regarding skin color, which we find tragic and completely unacceptable. Hence, you can imagine the Darlie-like smile on our faces when we encountered a Facebook group titled: Black people in Hong Kong!

As darker skinned folks represent a very small minority here, it comes as no surprise that the group has only 32 members so far (including our own Johnny Mountain since yesterday). That’s a rather sad number for a metropolis like ours. Hence, we sincerely hope that by generating some publicity here, a few additional members will be welcomed shortly. If only because the founder of the group, the lovely Donalda Donni McCarthy is herself a prime example of tolerance and cultural sensitivity (screenshot here).

Erm because Hong Kong is inherently racist?. This being the darkside blog I suppose I will fill you in on all the dirty details.

Stand and watch HK immigration at the airport who are the people who get pulled aside?.

Or just watch a taxi rank in TST darker people (and that includes SEA people and Indians) do not exist taxi drivers do not stop for them.

Or hell the MTR around central and TST, the trains maybe packed like sardines yet there is curious space around them as people do not want to stand around them.

A great many people will say this is limited, it is not, take for example the English schools in HK, there are 256 schools in HK, there are barely any non white English teachers, ha you go to Prince Edward to a School run by a certain Mr Li and they use Russians as 'native' english speakers. The school owners have to pander to the racism of their parents or go out of business, and therefore it is not just a limited occurance but it is deep and endemic within HK culture.

You only have to look at the amount of racial segregation there is in HK, the mid levels only white people were allowed to live there until 1999.

I am looking to move there later this year. That will be one more person to add to the small population.
