Students running for LegCo seats

Last week we talked about the possible interesting bits of the pointless LegCo by-election, the long awaited show of hands by all Hong Kong citizens that could effectively bring forth constitutional reforms. Apart from the possible participation of our beloved Fat Mama and the hot Pamela Pak, there’s something more refreshing and younger in this drama: some of our brilliant university students are running!

They named themselves T12: T stands for Tertiary and 12 for universal suffrage in 2012. Clever! And better than the Terminator model we initially thought they named themselves after. The students decided to run in the by-election because they’re worried that the five resigned legislators will be elected de facto, as everybody else in Hong Kong except the folks in the LSD-Civic Party alliance will ignore this so called “referendum.” In such a case, Hong Kong people’s view on universal suffrage for LegCo and CE in 2012 will remain a big mystery. T12 has proposed a “head I win, tail you lose” method for gauging our views: they’re going to add up the number of votes T12 and LSD-Civic Party get. If the sum is more than half of the votes received on the by-election day, they win and will imply Hong Kong wants universal suffrage in 2012.

Simple math ey? While our students are worrying about an uncontested election, Audrey Eu Yuet-mee, spokesperson for the “Five District Referendum” and Civic Party chairperson, is more prudent than these annoying post 80’s kids. She thinks T12’s participation will cause confusion to the general public.

Hey Audrey, I think LegCo has always been confusing and this is precisely what makes it so entertaining. So readers, if you want to see something refreshing in the upcoming LegCo drama, you need to pay up. T12 needs HK$ 250,000 for all five of the candidates to compete. How to donate remains a mystery so far though. In the meantime, you may direct your cheque to TDS Media Ltd. and we’ll make sure to get plenty of beer to forget this election is even about to take place.
